I returned my 300d yesterday.

Realizing all the advantages of digital I will stick with my old trusty Elan 7e for now. Actually, for the price of the 300d I can develop&print ~1000 rolls of film (~16-20 megapixels?), plus eye-controlle focus... but that's not the point.

Main reasons:

- no way to get a really wide angle shot (I have 17-35mm lens and I use it a lot with film)

- I personally didn't have the much talked-about soft focus issue but it's disappointing when camera focuses randomly without any logic to it (I had quite a few shots in full auto with a main subject in foreground (center of the frame) and landscape in background when it focused on the background). In full-auto my Elan NEVER does that

- ALWAYS underexposes flash sots, especially indoors

- 4 shots @2.5fps is a joke for sports/wildlife photography (vs. 36 frames @4fps with Elan)

- 300d "decides" when to switch focusing=>metering modes - I want to be able to make that decision myself

- if the sensor is smaller than 35mm frame - the lenses can also be smaller and lighter so "film" lenses are kind if a waste. I don't think canon is going to replace all their "full" lenses with "digital" ones. I'd think it's easier to make affordable full-frame DSLRs. The DR's kit lens may be just a marketing trick.

- I hope sometime next year we will have a full frame 11Mp sucessor of 10D. Even if it will be around $2000, that kind of camera I will keep for years to come so no more "renting" digital bodies which turns out to be very expensive if every couple of years you buy a new body and can't sell the old one.

Overall, 300d is an OK camera and I certainly understand people who are happy with it (I gues 90% of them are first-time SLR users).
